Dr Mark’s Approach to Teaching & Learning

Chinese ProverbDr Mark's Intention is to engage the enthusiasm, interest and excitement of pupils through a multi-sensory, 'full contact', novel and fun learning experience.

Modern research suggests that we may remember...

  • About 10 - 20% of what we READ.
  • About 20 – 30% of what we HEAR.
  • About 30 – 40% of what we SEE.
  • About 40 - 50% of what we SEE and HEAR.
  • About 50 – 70% of what we SAY.
  • About 60 – 80% of what we DO.
  • About 80 – 90% or more of what we READ, HEAR, SEE, SAY and DO

From research and experience we can conclude that there are several effective pathways for getting information into your brain and keeping it there, including:

  1. By MULTI-SENSORY INPUT – engaging as many of your primary senses as possible while learning (i.e. see, hear, touch, taste, smell.
  2. By ‘DOING’ – hands-on, kinaesthetic input;
  3. By DISCUSSION - talking about it with, and showing, others;
  4. By RELATING and APPLYING - relating and applying our new learning to things we already know about and to other things we want to understand; and two other ‘secret ingredients’ that so many educators seem to leave out:
  5. By making your kids FEEL GOOD about themselves – give your kids learning experiences which boost their self-esteem; give them challenging things to do which they can nonetheless achieve with the right effort and guidance;
  6. By making the learning experience POSITIVELY EMOTIONAL! – make the whole learning experience as engaging, stimulating, novel, exciting, inspiring, pleasurable, enjoyable and as fun as possible – and thus remove the pain and stress!

In other words, give your kids a good time, and they’ll remember!
